Matthew Rorick Wines /
First over the wall and first to glory, the Forlorn Hope was a volunteer-only company sent to test the enemy’s readiness. In the spirit of risk and reward, our winemaker pal, Matthew Rorick, came to us with the challenge of creating a cadre of distinctively elegant, classic labels for his first bottlings—his own brave advance party, his Forlorn Hope. After exploring everything from hand-drawn illustrations of doughboys in gas masks, to found-art snapshots of new WWI recruits, we settled on a type-only direction that mingles Rorick’s reverence for time-tested, artisanal winemaking techniques with his blunt and bold use of left-field varietals from odd or unexpected appellations.

Classy, no?
